  3. Design the smallest bounded method

    Select only the research, comparison, drafting, or quality-control steps that can be scoped, reviewed, and reversed.

  4. Test, challenge, compare, and define stop conditions

    Evaluate representative, authorized material against the current process, known failure modes, and explicit acceptance criteria.

This is the operating outline—not the recipe. Prompts, scripts, evaluation sets, thresholds, source-selection logic, client templates, and vendor configuration remain engagement-specific and confidential.

Method

Six controls for responsible use.

  1. Practitioner judgment stays in the loop

    AI-assisted material is reviewed by a qualified environmental practitioner before it enters a client deliverable or administrative record.

  2. Citations return to primary sources

    Statutory, regulatory, and case citations are checked against authoritative source material before use. Model output is never treated as authority.

  3. Established templates are preserved

    Tools are scoped around client-approved and attorney-reviewed templates instead of silently introducing new legal constructions.

  4. Methods are documented

    Prompts, source material, outputs, revisions, and reviewer decisions are retained or documented as appropriate to the engagement and record strategy.

  5. Data handling is scoped first

    Project sensitivity, client-approved infrastructure, retention, and model-training terms are addressed before confidential material is introduced to an AI workflow.

  6. Limits are stated plainly

    Clients are told what a method can and cannot reliably do. CEQA Labs declines uses that obscure impacts, bypass qualified review, or create unacceptable risk.

Does CEQA Labs automate environmental documents?

No. CEQA and NEPA documents require project-specific analysis, substantial evidence, agency judgment, and qualified review. CEQA Labs uses AI for carefully scoped research, drafting, comparison, and quality-control tasks while keeping practitioners responsible for the work product.

How is AI-assisted work documented for later review?

Using a drafting or research tool does not remove the need for authoritative sources, qualified review, and a method appropriate to the engagement. CEQA Labs documents material inputs, outputs, verification, revisions, decisions, and limitations as appropriate so authorized reviewers can understand how the work was developed. Legal interpretations remain with qualified counsel.

How is confidential project information handled?

Data sensitivity, client-approved infrastructure, retention, disclosure, access, and relevant vendor terms are scoped before work begins. This website makes no vendor-specific storage, retention, or training-use promise. Pre-decisional communications, sensitive species locations, privileged material, or active litigation may require additional restrictions or a conventional workflow.

Can CEQA Labs work within our approved technology stack?

Usually. The workflow is designed to be portable across approved tools. If your IT or legal team has already approved a particular platform, CEQA Labs can scope the method to that environment rather than introduce a new vendor.

Why not use a general-purpose AI tool directly?

General-purpose tools can be useful for low-risk tasks. CEQA Labs adds value when output must fit an established environmental review workflow: verified citations, attorney-reviewed templates, documented methodology, source controls, and senior practitioner review.

Do you provide legal advice?

No. CEQA Labs provides environmental planning, technical, research, workflow, administrative-record, and separately scoped expert-witness services. Legal interpretations, opinions, and strategy remain with qualified counsel.

How are engagements priced?

Work may be structured as a scoped project, hourly advisory engagement, ongoing retainer, training program, or custom tool build. Fees depend on scope, schedule, review responsibility, and data-handling requirements and are proposed after an initial discussion.
